Living The Romantic History Of La Garoupe, A Luxury Villa In Cap d’Antibes

Originally built as a beach snack bar, Garoupe beach welcomed a long list of VIP guests to its shores, including Pablo Picasso, The Prince of Wales, John F. Kennedy, F. Scott Fitzgerald and charismatic American expats Gerald and Sara Murphy. The Murphys were a wealthy young couple acclaimed for creating a vibrant social circle on the French Riviera in the early 20th century, composed of many artists and writers. The Murphys’ vibrant parties and overall joie de vivre are said to have inspired members of their artistic entourage to write such acclaimed novels as Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Heminway’s The Garden of Eden. There have also been several biographies recounting the lives of this formidable couple in the South of France, notably Living Well is the Best Revenge by Calvin Tomkins and Everybody Was So Young by Amanda Vaill.

The Empress of La Garoupe

The fame of Garoupe beach cannot however be wholly attributed to the Murphy family. It was the vision of one Jeannine Giotti, daughter of the Italian-French family who owned the land in the beginning of the 20th century, that created the Hollywood buzz around Garoupe. Jeannine had the idea of opening the beach to the public as a snack bar, and it slowly began gaining recognition and attracting A-list guests in the years that followed. Jeannine was a charismatic host, ensuring that only the most distinguished of guests would be welcome at Garoupe. She became known as ‘The Empress of La Garoupe’ a title which would make her go down in history as a local legend.

Garoupe: Beach club turned luxury Cap d’Antibes villa

Having spent most of her life entertaining the stars of the era at Garoupe beach, The Empress of La Garoupe eventually decided to begin letting out the villa. It was during this time that she met a French couple who had just returned from living in Tahiti and began renting Garoupe, as it reminded them of the beloved turquoise waters of their previous home. She regaled them with countless stories of the parties and faces that passed through Garoupe and the couple soon fell under the spell of the glamorous beach, eventually purchasing it in 1999.

The new owners ran it as a restaurant until 2007 when it was renovated and converted into a one-of-a-kind luxury Cap d’Antibes villa.
